This site is the realization of a dream. I am a freelance writer, which is another dream that has come true, and I dreamed of having a site that would inspire and educate women in overcoming the obstacles to their success, whether internal or external. This is that site.
The path to my dream
Both dreams, this site and the writing, are coming true because someone told me I couldn’t do something. I had a career path that I thought I would be successful at, then someone told me it wasn’t going to happen. I know I could have fought and kept at it, changed companies, or just ignored what the person said. Instead I took it as an invitation to see what I really wanted.
I looked at all my jobs and wrote what I liked about each of them. Then I wrote what I didn’t like about each one. I prioritized the likes and dislikes until I came up with about five of each. I looked at them and realized my current job was full of the stuff I disliked and had only a few of the things I liked. Hmmmm.
Next I wrote down my skills and the industries I had experience in. In the middle of this process, an old dream resurfaced. Twenty-five years ago I read a book that planted the seed that I wanted to be a freelance writer living on the beach. I always envisioned it would be in my later years, after I “retired.”
The dream wouldn’t let go, even though it didn’t fit the mold of what I thought I wanted in a job. So I prayed. I told my higher power that I would need a big sign to know if this is what I was supposed to do, and it would have to be clear and obvious. I don’t read signs well.
A sign from above
One day I was searching on the internet for information about how much money you can make as a freelance writer, when I saw this site written by a woman who had been a writer for about five years. She had lots of advice and she even had a free seven day course on starting out as a writer. I signed up immediately.
Every day for a week I looked forward to the email from the course. It was the highlight of my day. She broke things down in a way that I thought I could easily do. So I decided to try it. I could start out on the side, so there was no financial risk, just the possibility of a bruised ego.
Within a couple of weeks I had my first client, and then a second followed shortly after. In two and a half months I’d made my first $1,000, then made $1,000 per month the two months after that! The next month I made almost $2,000. I was a professional writer!
The moral of the story
Don’t let go of your dreams. Don’t let anyone take them away or crush them. We can do whatever we put our minds to. There will always be someone who has been there before and will lead you and show you the ropes.
